Turkey's parliamentary immunity debate intensifies as AKP rejects immediate action

AK Party Group Deputy Chair Leyla Şahin Usta repeatedly told journalists that there is currently no parliamentary commission or agenda to lift the immunities of CHP members such as Özgür Özel, Yıldız and seven other deputies. She emphasized that any move to remove parliamentary immunity would require a legal process and the preparation of indictment dossiers, which are not presently on the TBMM agenda.

The discussion is taking place alongside the broader "Terörsüz Türkiye" initiative, under which a so‑called framework law is being drafted. AKP officials indicated that the law could be completed before the parliamentary recess and that, if necessary, the parliament could be reconvened in an extraordinary session. TBMM President Numan Kurtulmuş is scheduled to meet CHP leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu as part of the ongoing negotiations on the framework law. No immediate legislative action on immunity removal is expected.
