Turkish cities roll out smart traffic projects to slash congestion

Muğla Metropolitan Municipality introduced an intelligent intersection system that uses loop detectors and smart cameras to monitor traffic in real time. By automatically adjusting signal timings, the system has reduced vehicle queues at some junctions by up to 83%. Mayor Ahmet Aras said the goal is to create a “modern, eco‑friendly and sustainable transport system” for the growing city.

In Antalya, the municipality began a traffic‑regulation project on Gazi Boulevard that redesigns lanes between Iller Bankası and Demokrasi intersections. The plan adds capacity to entry and exit lanes, aiming for three continuous lanes each way to improve flow and safety. Officials expect the work to markedly cut delays once completed, with Serdar Oruç Gün noting it will “accelerate traffic, prevent queues and provide safer transport.”
