Turkish climate scholar warns of accelerating warming in Mediterranean region

Doç. Dr. Abdulkadir Ergün, a professor at Sivas Cumhuriyet University, said climate change has moved beyond natural cycles, accelerating due to human activity and reaching levels that threaten human life. He noted that global temperature rises have been mirrored in Turkey, especially in the Mediterranean Basin, which is among the country's most climate‑vulnerable areas. Since the 2000s, high temperatures have become more frequent, and the past decade was the hottest ten‑year period on record. Ergün cited Copernicus climate data for June 2026, showing elevated land temperatures across Europe, and urged that societies must adapt to the new climate conditions.
