Turkish Cypriot administration defends Turkish military presence in Cyprus

The Turkish Cypriot administration has issued a statement asserting that the presence of Turkish troops on Cyprus is essential and that the Turkish Cypriot community will not accept their withdrawal under any circumstances.

This response follows comments made by Cypriot Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis, who characterized the existing guarantee system as “outdated.” The Turkish Cypriot side countered by claiming that the Republic of Cyprus itself is “outdated and invalid,” arguing that a lasting agreement can only be reached through cooperation between two independent and sovereign states that recognize the equal international status of the northern administration.

The statement further claimed that Turkey’s role as a “motherland” provides the primary guarantee for the security and existence of Turkish Cypriots, and argued that recent military procurement by the Republic of Cyprus demonstrates why these guarantees cannot be abandoned.
