Turkish military presence in Cyprus

Overview

Turkey has been upgrading its military infrastructure in occupied Cyprus to support its geopolitical ambitions. This includes upgrading the Lefkoniko airbase to host permanent combat aircraft, such as F-16 fighter jets, and deploying Bayraktar TB2 drones for surveillance missions that can reach as far as Lebanon and Israel.

In response to characterizations by the Republic of Cyprus that the current guarantee system is “outdated,” the Turkish Cypriot administration has defended the necessity of the Turkish military presence. The administration stated that the Turkish Cypriot community will not accept a withdrawal under any circumstances, asserting that Turkey serves as a “motherland” providing a primary guarantee for their security. The Turkish Cypriot side further argued that a lasting agreement requires recognition of two independent and sovereign states.
