Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman ready for new 5+1 Cyprus talks
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman said he is ready for a solution in line with the will of the people and is open to a new informal 5+1 meeting on the Cyprus issue.
UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres confirmed that both Cypriot communities and the three guarantor powers have agreed to a 5+1 format, provided sufficient preparation on confidence‑building measures, methodology and substantive issues.
Erhürman listed seven topics Guterres wants to address: new crossing points, de‑mining starting from the “dead zone”, cooperation on irregular migration, a joint crisis‑management mechanism, youth participation in sports events, EU citizenship for children of mixed marriages, and a civil‑society consultation mechanism.
The Turkish Cypriot side has accepted the de‑mining proposal, but Republic of Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides rejected it for security reasons. Erhürman said his side is ready to examine new crossing‑point proposals and other items, while opposing EU participation as a sixth party in the 5+1 talks.
