Turkish Cypriot man jailed for offering $100 bribe to police

A 22‑year‑old man identified as Ü. O. was arrested in İskele, Northern Cyprus, after he tried to bribe a police sergeant with US$100 to avoid a fine for his friend’s drunk‑driving offense at the Long Beach roundabout. The suspect, who had entered the territory on a tourist visa only two days earlier and had no permanent residence, was caught with the cash in his pocket and placed in custody. He appeared before a night court, where the judge ordered his detention in the Central Prison for up to one month pending further investigation.

The incident was part of a broader police crackdown that also saw other individuals detained for unrelated offenses, including false statements in a traffic‑accident investigation and disturbances caused by alcohol consumption.
