Turkish Cypriot Physiotherapists Association highlights bone health importance

The Turkish Cypriot Physiotherapists Association (KTFD) has emphasized the critical role of bone health in maintaining individual independence and safety in daily life. In a statement marking World Osteoporosis Day on October 20, Financial Coordinator Göktuğ Er noted that osteoporosis reduces bone density and often progresses without symptoms until a fracture occurs.

Citing data from the International Osteoporosis Foundation, Er stated that globally, one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 may experience osteoporosis-related fractures. Such injuries can lead to pain, mobility restrictions, fear of falling, and an increased reliance on others for daily tasks.

Er advised that risk factors—including a history of previous fractures, family history of hip fractures, and long-term corticosteroid use—should be evaluated by medical professionals. He also noted that sudden height loss or new back pain are signs requiring medical attention. To mitigate risks, the association recommends personalized exercise programs focusing on strength and balance to support bone and muscle health and reduce fall risks.
