Heavy rains raise reservoir levels and boost water supply projects across Turkey

Heavy rainfall this year has markedly increased water storage in several Turkish reservoirs. In Aksaray, the Mamasın Barajı reached a 46 % fill level, up from about 40 million m³ to 75 million m³, prompting expectations of higher agricultural yields in a region where 80 % of the population depends on farming. Similar gains were recorded in Kahramanmaraş, where the Menzelet and Kılavuzlu reservoirs rose to about 96 % capacity, improving both drinking‑water and irrigation prospects.

In the southeast, the Ilısu Baraj’s level rose after winter rains and snowmelt, restoring water to the historic town of Hasankeyf. Meanwhile, the Atatürk Baraj in Adıyaman reached full capacity, submerging islands that had emerged during the previous year’s drought. The Tekir Göleti on Mount Erciyes also refilled, reviving a former tourist spot.

Separate water‑infrastructure projects were also advanced. Sakarya’s municipal teams completed a combined drinking‑water, rain‑water and natural‑gas pipeline upgrade in Yeniköy, using 8,000 tons of asphalt to improve road conditions. In the Antalya province, the ASAT General Directorate continued extensive drinking‑water upgrades in Kaş, including new wells, pipelines and a SCADA monitoring system. Finally, Manisa’s metropolitan authority opened a new irrigation well in Çimentepe to support local grape growers.

These developments collectively improve water security, agricultural productivity and local infrastructure throughout Turkey.
