Turkish districts debate provincial status following MHP proposal
Following a proposal by Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli regarding a “100 provinces, 1000 districts” model, several Turkish districts are discussing the possibility of becoming independent provinces.
In Samsun, the Vezirköprü district has seen increased local enthusiasm. With a population of approximately 87,575, residents view the proposal as a long-awaited opportunity, though some maintain a cautious outlook regarding the final outcome.
In Zonguldak, discussions have emerged regarding the Ereğli district. Professor Hakan Şenol Kutoğlu of Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University has cautioned against “micro-nationalism,” arguing that such regionalist pushes might not benefit the area's strategic development. He noted that provincial boundaries should be determined by geographical, social, and cultural unity.
