Turkish Exporters Assembly head calls for exchange rate to match inflation

Mustafa Gültepe, President of the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM), has called for the exchange rate to increase in proportion to inflation to aid in the fight against rising prices. Speaking at the Istanbul Ready-to-Wear and Fashion Fair, Gültepe noted that the textile and ready-to-wear sectors are currently facing declines in turnover, employment, and overall market power.

Gültepe emphasized that increasing exports is essential to lowering inflation and suggested that the exchange rate should align with inflation levels for 2026 and beyond. He also noted that the service and industrial sectors have exports exceeding 400 billion dollars, and increasing these figures is vital for Turkey to reach a top-10 global economy.

Meanwhile, Central Bank of Turkey inflation forecasts indicate a gradual decline. The bank's latest report projects a year-end inflation rate of 28 percent for 2026, with targets of 15 percent for 2027 and 9 percent for 2028, marking 2028 as the projected year for returning to single-digit inflation.
