Turkey's FM Hakan Fidan visits Qatar, urges US‑Iran agreement

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is traveling to Doha on 19 July 2026 for a high‑level diplomatic visit. The agenda includes reaffirming Turkey’s solid support for Qatar amid recent attacks, reviewing the strategic partnership established in 2014, and preparing for the 12th High Strategic Committee meeting that Turkey will host later this year. Fidan will discuss regional security issues such as the Gaza situation, navigation safety in the Strait of Hormuz, and the broader Gulf tensions, while also pushing for the revival of a US‑Iran accord. He cited the earlier Pakistan‑mediated, Qatar‑backed agreement involving Turkey and called for a swift return to negotiations, warning that the conflict could spread and further damage the regional economy. The two sides also talked about expanding bilateral trade from the 2025 level of $1.1 billion to a target of $5 billion, and highlighted cooperation with other Gulf states on development and stability.
