Turkish Foreign Minister Says Cyprus Issue Resolved as Turkey‑North Cyprus Security Pact Discussed

Turkish Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu told a forum in Northern Cyprus that the "Cyprus problem is solved" and that the current situation is a de facto solution, stating that no further negotiations with the Greek‑Cypriot side are possible. He made the remarks at the Mediterranean Peace and Diplomacy Forum hosted by Bahçeşehir Cyprus University, which gathered politicians, parliamentarians and scholars from Iraq, Azerbaijan, Syria, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Western Thrace, Gagauzia, Bulgaria and South‑Azerbaijan.

Analysts note that recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean have reshaped the security landscape on the island. The lifting of the US arms embargo on the Republic of Cyprus, new French strategic agreements, Israeli defense cooperation, and EU defence financing have increased the Greek‑Cypriot military capacity. These changes are prompting calls for a comprehensive Turkey‑Northern Cyprus defence and security cooperation agreement, arguing that the 1960 guarantor system alone no longer meets contemporary security needs.
