Turkish Mayor Detained in Broad Crackdown on Opposition Leaders

On Friday, prosecutors in Silivri, a district of Istanbul, detained the Social‑Democratic mayor Bora Balcıoğlu and 18 other individuals on accusations of corruption and forming an organized crime group. The operation is part of a larger judicial push against members of the main opposition party, the CHP, following the party’s victories in the 2024 local elections. The Turkish government describes the arrests as lawful investigations, while the CHP claims they are politically motivated moves designed to weaken the party ahead of the 2028 presidential race.

The Silivri case follows similar detentions, including the arrest of the Buca mayor and dozens of other CHP officials earlier in June, as well as the ongoing legal battles surrounding the party’s leadership. The arrests have intensified internal party tensions, with a recent court ruling overturning the 2023 congress that elected Ozgur Ozel as leader and reinstating veteran Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.

Opposition figures argue the crackdown seeks to prevent prominent CHP mayors, such as Istanbul’s Ekrem İmamoğlu, from challenging President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in future elections.
