Turkish miners protest unpaid wages in Ankara

Workers of Doruk Madencilik, employed by the Turkish Mine Workers Union (Türk Maden‑İş) in Eskişehir, have been staging a sit‑in at Ankara’s Ulus Square demanding payment of five months of unpaid salaries and other legal entitlements. The protest, now in its second day, features slogans such as “Sadaka değil, hakkımızı istiyoruz” and memorials for miners who died in past accidents.

Union leaders from the Turkish Confederation of Trade Unions (Türk‑İş), including deputy chairman Ramazan Ağar and regional head Talih Kocabıyık, visited the demonstrators, condemned the company’s failure to meet promises, and pledged continued support. Ağar warned that if the workers’ claims are not met, the struggle will be expanded, stating “We will not abandon this fight until their rights are paid.” The protest highlights broader concerns about labor‑rights enforcement and oversight of private mining firms in Turkey.
