Turkey reports July current account surplus and 2.24 billion TL in market fines

Turkey's Minister of Trade, Ömer Bolat, reported a current account surplus of $36 million for July 2026. While this is a decrease from the $1.8 billion surplus recorded in July 2025, the annualized current account deficit stands at $40.7 billion. However, when excluding gold and energy, the annualized current account shows a surplus of $27.8 billion. Service exports reached an annualized $124.7 billion, driven by $60.3 billion in travel revenues and $43.7 billion in transportation revenues.

In a separate regulatory update, the Ministry of Trade announced that during the first eight months of 2026, it inspected 321,911 firms and over 39 million products. These inspections resulted in 2.24 billion TL in administrative fines. Significant penalties were issued for price gouging (399.5 million TL), the automotive sector (142.6 million TL), and real estate (39.3 million TL). Additionally, consumer protection inspections led to 771 million TL in fines related to contract irregularities and product safety.
