Turkish MP Adnan Beker quits CHP amid brother's detention in organized‑crime probe

Adnan Beker, a 1964‑born businessman from Yozgat who has served in various municipal roles and was elected to the Turkish parliament for the Good Party before becoming an independent, announced his resignation from the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on 16 November 2023. He said the party was dominated by personal accounts and illegality and that continuing a political fight within its structure would not benefit the country, so he would continue as an independent deputy.

A few days later, Beker’s brother, Özay Beker, was taken into custody together with three other suspects – Cemal Özdemir, Muhammet Yusuf Özdemir and Buğrahan Yüceldi – on allegations of establishing a criminal organization, membership in that organization, robbery, qualified fraud and laundering assets derived from crime. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that searches and seizures had been carried out at the suspects’ addresses and that investigations into the alleged proceeds were ongoing.
