Turkish municipalities launch new climate change mitigation initiatives

Turkish metropolitan municipalities are implementing new strategies to combat climate change through international cooperation and local action plans.

In İzmir, the Metropolitan Municipality is hosting the first stakeholder meeting for the “Implementation of the Climate Agenda in Metropolitan Cities (CLI-MET)” project. Supported by the Erasmus+ Program and led by the University of Palermo, the initiative aims to strengthen the role of metropolitan governments in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The project facilitates knowledge sharing between European experts, academics, and local authorities, focusing on climate justice, financing, and urban policies.

Meanwhile, the Denizli Metropolitan Municipality has launched its Local Climate Change Action Plan (YİDEP). During the launch ceremony, officials emphasized the necessity of sustainable urban management, including the integration of solar energy systems into buildings and the responsible management of water and waste. The initiative seeks to address looming crises in food, water, and energy security through proactive local governance.
