Turkish municipal climate change initiatives

Overview

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality joined the “Implementation of the Climate Agenda in Metropolitan Areas (CLI-MET)” project, an Erasmus+ supported initiative led by the University of Palermo. The project aims to strengthen local climate policies and facilitate expertise sharing among European cities regarding climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Following the project's initiation, İzmir hosted the first stakeholder meeting for CLI-MET to facilitate knowledge sharing between local authorities and European experts on topics such as climate justice and financing. Concurrently, other Turkish metropolitan areas have expanded local efforts, such as the Denizli Metropolitan Municipality launching its Local Climate Change Action Plan (YİDEP) to address food, water, and energy security through sustainable urban management.
