Turkish officials urge parental responsibility to prevent child access to firearms

Turkish National Education Minister Yusuf Tekin has called for increased parental responsibility to prevent children from accessing firearms. Speaking in Hakkari, Tekin highlighted the growing concern over violence in schools, noting that security measures within educational institutions alone are insufficient if children can easily access weapons at home. He specifically cited the risk of a first-grade student being able to take a weapon from their residence to school.

The Ministry is implementing multi-faceted measures, including social media monitoring, guidance activities, and family training programs. In response to similar incidents in various provinces, the Konya Provincial Police Department has also issued urgent warnings to licensed firearm owners. The police emphasized that weapons, magazines, and ammunition must be stored separately in locked, secure locations out of reach of children to prevent irreversible societal tragedies caused by momentary negligence.
