Turkish Ministry of Trade intensifies school supply inspections
The Turkish Ministry of Trade has launched nationwide inspections of stationery and school products ahead of the 2026-2027 academic year, which begins on September 14. The inspections target items such as school bags, lunch boxes, pens, notebooks, and school clothing to ensure they are free from prohibited chemicals and do not pose physical risks like choking hazards from cords or laces.
Products deemed unsafe will be banned from the market and recalled, with administrative sanctions applied to manufacturers and importers. Information regarding unsafe goods will be published through the Unsafe Product Information System (GÜBİS). Additionally, authorities are conducting price tag audits at supermarkets and retail stores to protect consumer economic interests.
Regarding costs, Taha Keresteci, President of the All Stationers Association (TÜKİD), reported that the average cost to fill a school bag has risen by approximately 25% compared to last year, reaching an average of 2,500 TL. Keresteci noted that while prices have increased, the rise remains below the overall inflation rate. He also urged parents to look for CE marks and EN 71 standards to ensure product safety.
