Turkish students win gold and silver medals at World Mathematics Invitational in Tokyo

At the World Mathematics Invitational (WMI) 2026 World Final held in Tokyo, a 13‑year‑old Turkish student, Atlas Haser, captured the gold medal while 15‑year‑old Mehmet Aras Başçiftçi earned silver. The competition drew around 1,000 participants and featured a 25‑question paper consisting of 15 multiple‑choice items and 10 open‑ended problems covering algebra, number theory, combinatorics, geometry and logical reasoning.

Haser, a seventh‑grader from a private school that has previously secured four gold medals at the WMI, prepares for the contest through a mix of national math contests such as the Kangaroo and TÜBİTAK Olympiads. He balances schoolwork, mathematics practice, and leisure, and cites his parents' engineering and economics backgrounds for early support. Başçiftçi followed a similar training path. Their success is presented as evidence of Turkey’s growing strength in international mathematics competitions.
