2026 Turkish youth earn medals at global contests

Overview

In May 2026, the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix saw various international delegations collect awards. Among them, 27 Turkish students submitted 13 projects, earning nine awards, including four Grand Awards. Notably, a team from Batman received recognition for an eye-tracking app designed for ALS patients.

June brought a wave of Turkish success at several international Olympiads. Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır reported that participants secured 1 gold, 7 silver, and 6 bronze medals, plus 7 special recognitions across the European Girls Computer Olympiad, European and Asian Physics Olympiads, and the Balkan Mathematics Olympiad.

July highlighted a 50-student team from İzmir’s Şehit Ömer Halisdemir Science and Art Center winning gold and two bronzes at the TIMO World Math Olympiad in Baku. Ten-year-old Ali Koç captured double gold for Turkey at the International Science Olympiad in Italy, repeating his top-8% finish at the American Mathematics Olympiad.

A second Turkish triumph arrived later in July at the World Mathematics Invitational in Tokyo, where students secured 53 medals—2 diamonds, 6 gold, 11 silver, and 34 bronze—and 21 Merit Awards. Winners included Demirel of Kartal Anadolu İmam Hatip Lisesi, 13-year-old Atlas Haser (gold), and 15-year-old Mehmet Aras Başçiftçi (silver).

On 26 July, Minister Kacır celebrated 19 medals won across the International Mathematics Olympiad in Shanghai, the International Biology Olympiad in Vilnius, the International Chemistry Olympiad in Tashkent, and the International Physics Olympiad in Bucaramanga.

In August, Turkish students supported by the TÜBİTAK Science Olympiads Program secured 15 additional medals in computer science, artificial intelligence, and geography competitions held in Uzbekistan, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, and Turkey.
