Turtle scale insect infestation forces tree interventions in Pineto and Ostia

The turtle scale insect (Toumeyella parvicornis) is causing significant damage to stone pine populations across different Italian regions, leading to urgent municipal interventions.

In Pineto, local authorities have ordered immediate treatments for 322 stone pines classified as severely affected. A technical report indicates that out of 712 monitored specimens, hundreds show heavy needle loss, branch desiccation, and sooty mold. Agronomists noted that specific climatic conditions have encouraged a fourth generation of the insect, increasing the risk of further spread. Priority areas for intervention include Via De Gasperi, Via Doria, Via Filiani, and the Quartiere dei Fiori.

In the Rome municipality, specifically in Ostia, Castel Fusano, and Infernetto, the infestation has reached a terminal stage for many trees. Authorities have scheduled the removal of 36 pine trees by September 2026 because they are either dead or dying. The most significant loss will occur in Parco X Giugno, where 22 trees are slated for removal. These removals are being conducted to ensure public safety and prevent sudden collapses in frequented areas.
