Scale insect infestation expands across Italy
Overview
The pine turtle scale insect (Toumeyella parvicornis) infestation has expanded across Italy, prompting new biological and financial calls for action.
In the Abruzzo region, the outbreak has spread along the Teramo coast from Pineto to Silvi, Alba Adriatica, Roseto degli Abruzzi, and Giulianova. In Pineto, a census identified 712 specimens, with 322 classified as severely compromised. Silvi has treated approximately 800 trees. Following official confirmation of the parasite, the Regional Phytosanitary Service established 5-kilometer buffer zones around infested areas. Enio Pavone of the Azione group has requested extraordinary financial support from the Abruzzo Region to help municipalities cover the unanticipated costs of mandatory monitoring, pruning, and waste disposal.
In Pisa, environmental associations such as WWF Alta Toscana and Italia Nostra are advocating for urgent measures to protect coastal and urban pine groves. They are supporting the regional introduction of Thalassa montezumae, a predatory coccinellid selected by CREA for biological control, following a world-first experimental release in Naples.
To mitigate damage in urban settings, experts recommend endotherapy—injecting systemic insecticides or biostimulants directly into the plant’s xylem. Additionally, environmental groups are calling for a suspension of massive forestry logging, warning that machinery vibrations and the transport of unpeeled timber increase the risk of passive parasite dispersal.
