Tuscaloosa honors late City Council President Kip Tyner

Tuscaloosa has organized a public celebration of life for the late Kip Tyner, the former Tuscaloosa City Council president who represented District 5 for nearly 29 years. During a memorial service held at Alberta Plaza, Mayor Walt Maddox announced that the city intends to honor Tyner’s legacy by renaming 26th Avenue East as Kip Tyner Parkway and designating the site of the service as Kip Tyner Plaza.

Tyner, who passed away on September 18, was a prominent figure in the Alberta community, particularly following the EF-4 tornado that struck the area on April 27, 2011. Speakers at the service highlighted his role as a tireless advocate for storm survivors. Ellen Potts of Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa noted that Tyner’s advocacy supported the construction of 54 homes in Alberta over 15 years, primarily for those affected by the disaster.
