Death and memorial of Tuscaloosa official Kip Tyner

Overview

Kip Tyner, the President of the Tuscaloosa City Council, passed away on September 18, 2026, following health challenges. A former weatherman for WCFT Channel 33, Tyner was recognized for his community dedication and support for local animal shelters. In response to his death, the Mayor ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff.

A public celebration of life was held at Alberta Plaza to honor Tyner, who had represented District 5 for nearly 29 years. During the memorial, Mayor Walt Maddox announced plans to honor Tyner’s legacy by renaming 26th Avenue East as ‘Kip Tyner Parkway’ and designating the memorial site as ‘Kip Tyner Plaza.’

Speakers at the service emphasized Tyner’s long-term advocacy for the Alberta community, particularly for survivors of the EF-4 tornado that struck the area in April 2011. Representatives from Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa noted that his efforts supported the construction of 54 homes in the region over a 15-year period.
