Tuscany allocates 10 million euros to reduce RSA waiting lists

The Tuscany Region has allocated 10 million euros to reduce waiting lists for residential nursing homes (RSA). As of late 2025, approximately 1,885 elderly individuals were waiting for placement, with high concentrations in the provinces of Florence and Pisa.

The funding is expected to facilitate entry for about 700 people. Half of this initial allocation will be directed toward areas that have historically received fewer resources, specifically the Asl Nord ovest, which covers Pisa, Livorno, Massa Carrara, and Lucca. The regional contribution will cover the “sanitary quota,” which accounts for roughly half of the monthly fee.

Looking toward 2027, additional investments are planned, including 20 million euros to address waiting lists and 12 million euros for staff contract adjustments. Furthermore, the region intends to cover the full cost of care for patients with dementia, a responsibility currently shared with families. To support the elderly facing initial fragility, the region is also implementing programs such as “Sostegno fragilità anziani,” providing home visits and assistance in finding qualified caregivers.
