Tuscany regional healthcare funding and waiting lists

The Tuscany region is addressing significant strain within its healthcare system, particularly regarding long waiting lists for elderly care and specialized surgeries.

In 2025, the region allocated €53 million to perform orthopedic prosthetic surgeries, such as hip and knee replacements, in the neighboring Emilia-Romagna region. This expenditure was driven by long public hospital waiting lists, with a significant portion of the €80.6 million total orthopedic mobility spend directed toward private clinics in Bologna.

To further address care shortages, Tuscany allocated 10 million euros to reduce waiting lists for residential nursing homes (RSA), aiming to facilitate placement for approximately 700 individuals. This funding focuses on the “sanitary quota” of monthly fees, with half of the resources directed toward areas like Asl Nord ovest. Looking toward 2027, the region plans additional investments of 20 million euros for waiting lists and 12 million euros for staff contract adjustments, alongside initiatives to cover full care costs for dementia patients and provide home assistance through programs like “Sostegno fragilità anziani.”
