Tuscany announces 10 million euro initiative to support birth rates
Tuscany has launched the “Si nasce in Toscana” project, a 10 million euro initiative designed to support birth rates and strengthen regional welfare. Announced by Regional President Eugenio Giani, the plan includes a 500 euro contribution for every new mother starting in 2027, following the implementation of the new regional budget.
The funding is split into two equal parts: five million euros from regional resources will provide the direct 500 euro contribution to mothers, while another five million euros, sourced from the European Social Fund, will support working women. This second portion will focus on childcare expenses to help balance work and family life, based on income criteria.
The initiative responds to demographic data from the Regional Health Agency (Ars), which shows a significant decline in births in Tuscany, dropping from over 33,000 in 2008 to just over 20,000 projected for 2025. President Giani stated that the measure is part of a broader welfare system that includes free nurseries and textbooks.
