Tuscany mayors rally to keep Campostaggia maternity unit open
Regional health deputy Enrico Tucci said the Montevarchi birth point is on track to reach the required 500 deliveries per year, noting it has already recorded 300 births this year and expects to meet the threshold by 2027. He confirmed a 12‑month temporary exemption for Nottola and a six‑month monitoring period for Montevarchi, while the technical committee gave a negative opinion on Campostaggia, recommending its closure.
Eight mayors from the Val d’Elsa and Chianti areas issued a joint appeal opposing any shutdown of the Campostaggia maternity unit. They highlighted the hospital’s quality of care, recent upgrades such as a new chief physician, expanded pediatric beds, a new delivery suite and innovative practices, arguing that the facility remains essential for the region despite declining birth rates.
