Tuscany peripheral maternity ward closures

Overview

In Tuscany, local officials and regional representatives are contesting the potential closure or reorganization of peripheral maternity wards. While regional health deputy Enrico Tucci indicated that the Montevarchi birth point is expected to meet the required 500 annual deliveries by 2027, a technical committee recommended the closure of the Campostaggia unit.

In response, eight mayors from the Val d’Elsa and Chianti areas issued a joint appeal to keep the Campostaggia facility open, citing recent upgrades and essential local service. This advocacy has expanded to include the Regional Guarantor for Childhood and Adolescence, Stefano Scaramelli, who petitioned the Minister of Health. Scaramelli argued that national birth-rate thresholds do not account for regional geography, noting that travel times to alternative hospitals could compromise neonatal safety in areas like Campostaggia, La Gruccia, and Nottola.
