Tuscany unions demand safer Amazon deliveries amid heatwave

The Filt Cgil union representing workers in Florence, Prato and Pistoia has warned that couriers delivering for Amazon are facing excessive workloads under extreme heat.

The regional ordinance (Tuscany ordinance n. 2 of 28 May 2026) bans work in direct sunlight between 12:30 and 16:00 on high‑risk days until 31 August 2026, aiming to prevent heat stress. The union says the measures taken by companies are “limited and inadequate” and that couriers still endure rapid temperature changes between vehicle interiors and the outdoors, a situation worsened by promotional campaigns that boost delivery volumes.

The union urges the industry association Assoespressi to apply article 20 of the National Collective Agreement, which requires reduced workloads, fewer routes and suspension of deliveries in areas with adverse weather while guaranteeing workers’ pay. It warned that, without concrete action, it will pursue all legal and collective‑bargaining remedies available. “La tutela della salute e della sicurezza non può essere subordinata alle esigenze produttive o commerciali.”
