Tuya Smart unveils Doova mobile robot for senior care

Tuya Smart has unveiled Doova, a wheeled AI-powered robot designed to assist seniors living alone, at IFA 2026 in Berlin. Unlike stationary smart speakers, Doova uses LiDAR navigation and a four-microphone system to physically move toward a user when a verbal distress call is detected.

Upon reaching a user, the robot utilizes AI-based computer vision to analyze posture and assess the situation. If a user does not respond within 60 seconds, the device initiates an emergency process that alerts family members via a two-way live video call. Beyond emergency response, the robot features a multimodal large language model that allows for conversational interaction, medication reminders, schedule tracking, and assistance with interpreting documents or identifying potential scams.

While intended to support independent living, the device raises questions regarding privacy due to its continuous use of microphones and vision systems. Additionally, it is currently positioned as a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, professional medical alert services, as it is unclear if the robot can detect falls autonomously without a verbal command or contact emergency services directly.
