Tuyên Quang High School Math Score Scandal Triggers Arrests and University Admission Review

In July 2026, the national high‑school graduation exam in Tuyên Quang province showed an abnormal concentration of perfect math scores – 147 of 154 students from the province’s specialised school earned a score of 10. Investigations by the Tuyên Quang provincial police identified abuse of authority: deputy principal Trần Thị Thu Hằng allegedly directed supervisors to favor certain candidates, and teacher Nguyễn Hà Duy entered the exam room to guide students. By 13 July, a total of 19 individuals had been formally charged with “abusing position, authority while performing official duties” under Article 356 of the Criminal Code. The government has ordered a full probe of the irregularities and, in parallel, some officials have called for the high‑school graduation exam and the university entrance exam to be separated to prevent such conflicts of interest. The Ministry of Education and Training has stated that, pending the outcome of the investigation, all 328 students who sat the exam may continue to apply for university admission as planned; any student later found to have violated exam regulations will be dealt with according to existing rules.
