Tuzla Mayor Eren Ali Bingöl Awaits Erdoğan's Approval to Join AKP

Eren Ali Bingöl, the 31‑year‑old mayor of Tuzla elected in the 31 March 2024 local elections, has announced his intention to leave the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and join the Justice and Development Party (AKP).

According to reports, Bingöl’s request was forwarded by the AKP Istanbul provincial chair to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and the transfer will only be completed once Erdoğan gives his consent. Bingöl, who previously criticised the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the demolition of illegal buildings in Tuzla, framed his move as a response to perceived hostility from the CHP and its local operations.

The planned party change is being closely watched in Turkish political circles, as it reflects shifting alliances among younger local officials and the central role of the president in approving such transfers.
