Twin Falls, Idaho In‑N‑Out Burger shooting leaves 3 dead, 7 injured

On August 1, 2026, 24‑year‑old Chad Williams opened fire at the In‑N‑Out Burger drive‑thru in Twin Falls, Idaho. He approached the window four times, killing three people – Ashley Garibay (23), Dale Schultz (66) and Christopher Claunch (59) – and wounding seven others. After his handgun jammed, Williams retrieved a rifle from his vehicle and continued the attack before turning the gun on himself.

Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks said the first officer arrived within three minutes of the 911 call, but it took about 90 minutes to confirm there was only one shooter. Police have not identified a motive. Surveillance video released by the department shows the shooter firing through the drive‑thru window, confronting bystanders, and being challenged by an off‑duty state trooper, former officer A.J. James and several armed civilians. One civilian, Braxton Steube, spoke to Williams on a nearby trail, an act police credit with slowing the gunman and allowing others to escape. The incident prompted praise for the “heroic” actions of the off‑duty trooper, the former officer and the armed bystanders.
