Twin Falls Idaho In-N-Out shooting
Overview
On August 1, 2026, 24-year-old Chad Williams carried out a mass shooting at the In-N-Out Burger drive-through in Twin Falls, Idaho. The attack resulted in the deaths of Ashley Garibay (23), Dale Schultz (66), and Christopher Claunch (59), and left several others wounded. Williams died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after being confronted by officers on a walking trail.
During the attack, Williams approached the drive-through window four times. After his handgun jammed, he retrieved a rifle from his vehicle to continue the assault. Surveillance and body-camera footage released by the Twin Falls Police Department depict the suspect firing indiscriminately through the window, moving through a busy intersection, and approaching the Twin Falls Visitor Center.
Authorities have highlighted the intervention of several individuals who helped mitigate the violence. Off-duty Idaho State Police Specialist Steve McClain (identified in earlier reports as former officer A.J. James) engaged the shooter by returning fire and directing employees to safety. Additionally, Braxton Steube, an employee from a nearby Dick’s Sporting Goods, attempted to distract Williams by confronting him with his hands raised on a nearby trail. Police credit these actions with slowing the gunman and allowing others to escape.
Police Chief Matthew Hicks described the event as “violent, terrifying, and deeply traumatic.” While first responders arrived within three minutes, it took approximately 90 minutes to confirm there was only one gunman. Investigators have not yet established a motive for the attack.
