Two Romanian Alpinists Killed in Gran Paradiso Climbing Accident

On July 9, two Romanian climbers set out from the Vittorio Emanuele II refuge to ascend Italy’s Gran Paradiso. They failed to return, prompting a large‑scale search involving Italian mountain‑rescue teams, police, volunteers and helicopters. After several days, rescuers located a crevasse about 20 metres deep at roughly 3 700 metres altitude. The bodies of the two alpinists were recovered from the crevasse. Their identities have not been released; a son of one of the victims reported the disappearance. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the fatal fall.
