Two Americans arrested in Japan for $1 million cannabis smuggling attempt

Two 25-year-old American women have been arrested at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport after authorities discovered approximately $1 million worth of cannabis hidden in their luggage. The suspects arrived on a flight from New York on September 5, carrying two suitcases containing 35 bags of dried cannabis-like plants weighing about 66 pounds (30 kilograms).

One of the women has admitted to the smuggling attempt, reportedly stating she accepted the job because she was “attracted by the fact I could go to Japan for free” and that her airfare and accommodation would be covered. The second woman has denied knowledge of the drugs being inside the suitcases.

Japan maintains strict anti-drug regulations. Under local law, importing cannabis for profit can carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Authorities noted that the estimated street value of the seized haul is approximately 150 million yen.
