American citizens arrested for cannabis smuggling in Japan

Overview

Two 25-year-old American women, identified as Catron Jamere Bourbon Castillo and Jocelyn Dizon Natividad Patrin, were arrested at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle approximately 30 kilograms of dried cannabis from New York.

The shipment, consisting of 35 packages hidden in two suitcases, had an estimated street value of roughly 150 million yen (approximately $1 million USD). Customs officials intercepted the drugs following the women’s arrival on September 5.

During investigations, Castillo reportedly admitted to the charges, stating she took the job because she was “attracted by the fact I could go to Japan for free” and would have her travel and accommodation covered. Patrin has denied knowledge of the drugs being in the luggage. Police suspect the women may have been working with an unidentified individual they met via social media but had never met in person.
