Two brothers rescued in South Tyrol after hiking to closed mountain hut
Two brothers, aged 13 and 16, were rescued from the mountains in South Tyrol after being left alone by their parents during a hiking trip. The boys had climbed over 1,000 meters to reach the Bonnerhütte at an altitude of 2,340 meters, only to find the mountain hut had been closed for over a week.
After the parents turned back several hours into the hike, the boys continued alone. They spent the night outdoors without adequate clothing, leading to significant hypothermia and illness for one of the children. The boys contacted their parents around 1:00 AM, who then alerted emergency services.
Mountain rescue teams from Hochpustertal recovered the children and transported them to a hospital in Innichen. While the boys have since been discharged, rescue officials criticized the incident as “great recklessness,” noting that the family had failed to check the hut's operating hours and that the children were not properly equipped for the cold.
