South Tyrol mountain rescue of two minors

Overview

Two brothers, aged 13 and 16, were rescued from the mountains in South Tyrol after attempting to reach the Bonnerhütte at an altitude of 2,340 meters. The boys had continued the hike alone after their parents turned back during the trip, only to find the mountain hut had been closed for over a week.

After spending the night outdoors without adequate clothing, the youngest child suffered from significant hypothermia. Following a 1:00 AM contact with their parents, mountain rescue teams from Hochpustertal recovered the children and transported them to a hospital in Innichen. While the boys were later discharged, rescue officials described the incident as “great recklessness,” citing the family’s failure to check operating hours and the lack of proper equipment for the cold.
