Two friends killed by NYC subway train at Spring Street station

Two 24-year-old friends, Malaika Chitre and Navam Kaul, were killed after being struck by a southbound Number 4 subway train at the Spring Street station in Lower Manhattan. The incident occurred around 3:15 am on September 13.

Video footage from the station reportedly shows the pair sitting on the tracks shortly before the train arrived. The train operator attempted to use the emergency brakes but was unable to stop in time. According to reports, the operator noted that “the woman was laughing and pulling the male towards her” as the train approached.

Both victims were recent 2024 graduates of Rutgers University. Navam Kaul, a resident of Sayreville, New Jersey, worked as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg. Malaika Chitre, from Dayton, New Jersey, worked as a quality operations specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals and was pursuing a pharmacy degree at Temple University.

NYPD detectives are investigating the circumstances of the deaths. Authorities are looking into whether intoxication played a role or if the incident was a suicide, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
