Fatal Manhattan subway collision

Overview

On the morning of September 13, two 24-year-old friends, identified as Malaika Chitre and Navam Kaul, were killed after being struck by a southbound No. 4 subway train at the Spring Street station in Lower Manhattan.

Initial reports noted that video footage appeared to show the pair sitting on the tracks facing the oncoming train with no visible attempt to move. Subsequent details identified the victims as recent Rutgers University graduates; Kaul worked as a financial data analyst at Bloomberg, while Chitre worked at Acadia Pharmaceuticals and was pursuing a pharmacy degree at Temple University.

The train operator reportedly attempted to use emergency brakes but could not stop in time. One report indicated the operator observed “the woman was laughing and pulling the male towards her” as the train approached. NYPD detectives are investigating the circumstances, including whether intoxication or suicide played a role.
