Mediterranean region faces missing persons searches and drought

Multiple search operations and environmental crises are unfolding in the Mediterranean region. In the border area between Italy and Switzerland, a 62-year-old Spanish woman has been missing since September 13 after getting lost in the Bosco Meriggio area near Sighignola. Search efforts by mountain rescue, firefighters, Carabinieri, and dog squads are ongoing, though locating her via mobile phone has been impossible because her device was in her husband's backpack.

On the island of Mallorca, authorities are managing two distinct issues. Severe drought conditions have triggered emergency water restrictions in the municipality of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar. Under the Balearic drought protection law, hotels face limits on pool filling and garden irrigation, while households with wells must reduce consumption by 20 percent. This follows the hottest and driest August in the region since 1961.

Simultaneously, police are searching for two missing German nationals on Mallorca. Reiner Schnell, 77, has been missing since September 11 after being last seen in Llucmajor. Additionally, 72-year-old Hans Peter Harke has been missing since July 31 after departing on a bicycle ride from Campos without water, food, or identification.
