Two hikers die in separate mountain accidents in northern Italy
Rescuers in the Valbiandino area near Barzio concluded a search on 27 May after a missing hiker was located dead. The man, a non‑local resident, had separated from his companion during the trek and was found when a mobile‑phone signal was detected using IMSI‑catcher equipment. Alpine rescue teams and fire services recovered the body and transferred it to the Barzio morgue.
A separate incident occurred near Barcis in the province of Pordenone, where a German tourist from Berlin was discovered dead around 16:00 on a Sunday. He had followed an outdated trail that had been closed due to a landslide, slipped on the fractured ground and fell several metres. Rescue crews, including the Guardia di Finanza, fire‑department helicopters from Venice and a regional air‑rescue unit, carried out a difficult recovery on the steep terrain. The hiker’s companion, who had turned back earlier, reported the disappearance, prompting the search.
