Two hikers die in Spain's Aragon Pyrenees within 24 hours

A 63‑year‑old hiker from Guipúzcoa died on Sunday after a rockfall struck him on the Senda de los Cazadores trail in Ordesa National Park, Torla municipality. The impact caused him to plunge down a steep slope; rescue units from the GREIM of Boltaña, the Benasque Air Unit and a medical team responded, but he was declared dead and his body was evacuated by helicopter.

The day before, a 63‑year‑old mountaineer from Burgos was found dead on Pico Estatas near Benasque after disappearing for several days while attempting a high‑mountain traverse. The Guardia Civil’s mountain rescue team located him, confirmed he had no signs of life and transferred the body to the provincial hospital.

These incidents are part of a series of 18 rescue operations carried out by the mountain rescue service in the Aragon Pyrenees over four days, which included two fatal outcomes.
