Outdoor accidents and fatalities in Spain

Overview

Fatal outdoor accidents have been reported in various regions of Spain. In the Aragon Pyrenees, two hikers died within a 24-hour period: one was killed by a rockfall in Ordesa National Park, and another was found dead after disappearing during a high-mountain traverse near Benasque.

In the Huesca Pyrenees, additional fatalities occurred in mid-August. On August 17, a 63-year-old French man died on the Ganchos trail in Hecho, with authorities suggesting a possible heart attack. On August 19, a 56-year-old American man died following a vertical fall in the Colada de Pineta area of Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. The Guardia Civil's Mountain Rescue and Intervention Groups (GREIM) reported 19 interventions involving over 30 people during this period, bringing the summer death toll in Huesca province to 11.

Other incidents included a fatal paragliding accident in the Sierra de Montánchez, Cáceres, where a 50-year-old man fell at the start of a flight. A 35-year-old second paraglider was rescued uninjured after becoming trapped in brushwood. Additionally, a 75-year-old hiker died following a 200-meter fall in Somiedo, Asturias, while hiking between the Saliencia lakes and Bígaros peak. Rescue efforts in Asturias were hindered by dense fog and difficult terrain, which prevented helicopter operations and necessitated ground teams.
