Two Iranians charged in UK terror plot targeting Manchester Jewish community

Two Iranian nationals, Salam Ahmadyan, 36, and Rahman Salehi, 34, have been charged with preparing for terrorist acts in Manchester. Authorities allege the pair planned an attack targeting the local Jewish community around the time of Yom Kippur.

Investigators claim the suspects used encrypted messaging apps to obtain instructions for constructing an improvised explosive device, specifically a chlorine and car brake fluid bomb. The men are accused of conducting reconnaissance, gathering maps and photographs of potential targets, and researching locations online.

Police believe the suspects were in contact with a third party, potentially located in Iran. Both men reportedly entered the United Kingdom via small boats in 2020 and 2023. One suspect has been granted asylum, while the other has an active claim.

Counter-terrorism officials stated that the plot has been disrupted and they believe there is no ongoing threat to the public. The charges come amid heightened security concerns and a rise in antisemitism. The suspects are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
